What are feminized seeds?
Similar to Asparagus and Spinach Plants, Cannabis is a dioecious plant. This means that the opposing genders have their own distinct flower-types that exist on separate plants. Compare this to other crops like corn or cucumber which are monoecious plants, containing both sex organs on one plant and being capable of self-pollination. Now, both male and female cannabis plants will produce flowers, or as we like to call them ‘buds’, but they are not the same size and quality.
The premium weed that you typically find in dispensaries across America today is cultivated from well-nurtured female plants. This is because the females produce much more robust, dense, and resinous buds than their male counterparts. The males do have an important job, which is to produce seeds. This is necessary for the strain to continue its lineage out in nature. The downside of weed seed production is that it lowers the smoking quality of your buds. Cannabis consumers may have experienced the surprise of a loud “pop” when smoking a joint, and this is most definitely a seed that is exploding under the pressure of the hot cherry. Aside from this, seeded bud is also typically harsher on the throat and lower in THC, the valuable psychoactive chemical that actually gets you high.
So, one of the few ways to prevent your indoor or outdoor cannabis crops from getting infested with male plants, is to invest in high-grade feminized cannabis seeds. As we will go on to explain further, these seeds contain no male genetic material whatsoever, which makes it virtually guaranteed that they will develop into high-yielding female pot plants. There is the rare mechanism by which female plants can be stressed out to the point of developing their own pollen sacs. These plants will self pollinate, in order to develop seeds as a last-ditch effort to pass on its genetic information to the next generation. This is after all the principal force at play in Darwin’s theory of evolution – only passing on the strongest genes when species are lost due to hardships or challenges.
Plants grown from feminized weed seeds must be forced to self-pollinate, with methods to be discussed in the following section. Otherwise, there are very slim chances that you will ever find seeds in your crop. Even still, if seeds were to be made using one of these methods, the outcome would be feminized seeds, since there is no male genetic material to develop “male seeds”. When you get an assorted bag of regular marijuana seeds, the expectation is that the gender split of male/female seeds is roughly half and half. Whether you grow 4 plants or 400, these odds simply aren’t good enough to rely on for a juicy bumper crop of smokable cannabis buds,
How are feminized marijuana seeds made?
The early days
Humans have been cultivating cannabis for thousands of years, as evidence by findings in ancient tombs in Asia. These strains were certainly not the same high-THC varieties that we appreciate today, but certainly had an important role to play in cultural ceremonies and medicinal uses as well. Farming and propagating plants comes with a ton of knowledge gained through observation, so although cannabis growers in 500 B.C. may not have fully understood the principles of cellular genetics, they would have very likely known the difference between male and female plants and their respective strengths and weaknesses.
At this stage in humanity there was really only the option to grow outdoors, since hydroponics and electricity hadn’t been invented yet. The marijuana plant, being a weed, is very robust and can reproduce in even the most unfavorable conditions. Allowing the male plants to pollinate the nearby female plants would produce enough seeds that growers could collect them and have plenty of stock to generate the next season’s crop of sativa or indica strain cannabis. Once science caught up in the 20th century, cannabis breeders had discovered a beneficial technique to increase their yields, and therefore their profits.
Modern Day Cannabis Breeders
Today feminized marijuana seeds have dropped considerably in price and increased in the number of strains available drastically since their initial release on the market in 1998 by the breeder Dutch Passion. They discovered that female cannabis plants that were stressed into producing pollen themselves (essentially becoming hermaphrodites) gave rise to seeds that contained only female genetic information. In other words the pollen was not true male pollen, but a ‘girl’ version made with only two X chromosomes.
For quick lesson in basic genetics, in plants and humans the “X” chromosome has been affiliated with female characteristics. Each cell requires a complete set of two chromosomes in order to function in a healthy way and maintain genetic variance in the population. For females, this ends up being a homogametic combination of XX, while in males the cell nucleus has a heterogametic combination of XY.
Female pollen is therefore a lot like male pollen except for the fact that it is purely (XX) and not (XY). For this reason the seeds can only really give rise to female plants barring any other stressful situations that force the plant to change genders. Examples of environmental forces at play could be a drastic spike in temperature or and interruption to the plant’s light/dark cycle. Plants can also be forced by chemical means into producing male-like flowers with the addition of:
- Colloidal Silver.
- Time. An extra 10-14 days after ideal harvest time, your plants will become “stressed” and form male bananas full of pollen.
The Future of Feminized Seeds USA
Now that cannabis seed breeders in countries around the world have mastered the ability to create high-THC and high-CBD strains, the next 10 to 20 years will likely see new cannabinoids taking the scene. The subtle benefits of other compounds in the marijuana plant such as CBG and THCV. These aren’t the main compounds that get you high or relieve your pain the way CBD can, but modern research is showing that the other cannabinoids definiltey offer a synergistic effect and bring unique benefits to your smoking (or edible) experience.
Another huge topic of interest going forward in the growing weed for sale market is the world of terpenes. Seasoned cannabis connoisseurs are looking for not jus the strongest weed, but also the tastiest. Terpenes are the scent=producing lipid molecules that really set each strain apart in terms of flavor. Soon we will see strains of feminized seeds containing the most potent mix of flavor combinations. Imagine the colorful combinations you can create when mixing the following complementary flavors:
- Myrcene (Herbal) – Antioxidant, pain management, inflammation, insomnia
- Pinene (Pine) – Treatment of asthma, pain, anxiety, inflammation
- Caryophyllene (Terpinolene Peppery) – treatment of pain, depression, ulcers
- Limonene (Citrus) – helpful for anxiety, depression, inflammation, pain
- (Fruity) – Antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-cancer, anti-fungal
Are feminized seeds hermaphroditic?
In addition to the stressors above, female plants can also switch genders based on, but not limited to, the following:
- Varying key nutrient levels. High potassium and low nitrogen can increase male tendencies, while low potassium and high nitrogen will promote female tendencies.
- Temperature. Low temperatures increase the odds of female growth while higher temperatures make more male plants.
- Moisture in soil. Higher moisture content in the growing medium promotes females while low moisture content favors males.
- Humidity. When the surrounding air is more humid, females are more likely to grow while low humidity favors males.
- Light Wavelength. Some modern LEDs allow you to tweak the color band to suit your own custom growing ideas. More blue light may increase the number of female plants. More red light may increase the number of male plants.
- Photoperiod changes. When you grow your vegging plants in fewer hours of daylight (14 to 16) compare to more hours (16 to 18 hours), this might increase the proportion of female plants as well.
Keep in mind that these changes are very small adjustments and only have a real influence on gender during the first 2 weeks of the vegetative stage. This is when the plant has 3 complete pairs of leaves and is about 6 to 8 inches tall. Any drastic changes, up or down, will cause stress and therefore push your plants toward male-hood.
Signs that your plant is a hermaphrodite
Small pollen sacs will be available right near the nodes where buds develop these are small ball-shaped bundles nestled in the node where new branches emerge. You will also see near the pollen sac a small banana shaped stamen. Sometimes a dusting can be seen on the leaves below the stamens if pollen has already begun dispersing. If you see these developing in your crop early enough they can be removed, but unless you are checking your plants very regularly it can be easy to miss and once pollination happens you can’t stop the seed production process from going through to completion.
Why choose feminized weed seeds
As mentioned earlier, female cannabis plants really offer the best buds and more beneficial blend of compounds for recreational or medical purposes. In order to guarantee that your crop is hassle-free and able to grow without risking the chance of seeds, definitely invest in guaranteed feminised seeds from a reputable seed bank. When you decide to sprout regular seeds instead, you need to be prepared to spend significant time in your garden looking for male plants, which can be stressful. Feminized seeds will grow into female plants and leave you to focus your time on other more pressing things, like how to make improvements to your grow room or keep up with the weeding in your outdoor garden.
Feminized seeds were once a very expensive premium commodity. Now that they have been in development for over 20 years, the price has come down considerably and feminized seeds actually represent most of the seeds for sale out there on the internet. I49 seed bank is sure to perform random testing on our batches of feminized seeds to ensure quality and viability. Feminized seeds are discreetly packaged and ready to germinate as soon as they arrive.
How to germinate feminized seeds?
Feminized weed seeds should be germinated just the same way as any other cannabis seeds you buy from our online store. The i49 preferred method is to first soak your seeds in water for 14 to 18 hours. After this point, the grower must transfer the seeds carefully to a paper towel, fold over once or twice, and cover with a few droplets of water. The paper towel must remain in a dark, warm location where there is no risk that they will be physically disturbed. A temperature range of 70 to 85 Fahrenheit Keeping the towel damp, but not soaking wet, is of utmost importance as the aim is to mimic the conditions in nature which promote seeds to crack and sprout.
Once your cannabis seeds have been incubating for the right period (anywhere from two to seven days depending on the strain), you should see a thin white tap-root emerge. Once this taproot has reached at least one half inch in length you can transplant the delicate sprouted seed into your growing medium. Poke a shallow hole (1/4 inch) with a pencil and drop in the seed, ideally using tweezers, making sure to point the taproot facing down. Keep the soil slightly moist to the touch by spraying periodically with water a couple of times a day. When you see your first leaves (cotyledons) shooting out of the growth medium, you are now well on your way to growing your own cannabis plant!
Where to grow feminized seeds?
At I49 USA, we carry strains of feminized 420 seeds that are ideal for both indoor growing and outdoor growing. Based on different lineages and different countries of origin, certain strains will do better in warm tropical conditions while others will do better in the more moderate mountainous climate of the mid-west United States. You may notice that several of our pot seed varieties appear under both categories and this is for the simple reason that some strains are so robust and reliable that they will grow well no matter where you grow them – given that you meet the needs as far as water, nutrients, and proper lighting.
Things to Consider when growing Feminized Seeds Outdoors
In the beginning, all weed seeds were outdoor seeds. So as you can imagine it really isn’t difficult to meet the bare minimum requirements for your medical or recreational seeds to survive into adulthood. Weed plants can get through just about anything, but remember how above we pointed out how hermaphrodites can be easily created when environmental conditions aren’t kept in check.
Depending on your home state’s policies, you may need to keep your outdoor grow under wraps. This means replacing that rickety fence you’ve been putting off for years with something a little taller. Perhaps you choose to buy a small greenhouse kit online and place your feminized cannabis plants in there. Companion planting next to certain other tall plants, like tomatoes or sunflowers, can help to mask the appearance of your pot plants and keep it discreetly hidden from any nosy neighbors.
If you live in a climate that has unpredictable summer weather, and you are not growing in a greenhouse, you may want to consider leaving your feminized seedlings to grow and mature in a mobile container. You can find a variety on constructs from wood to plastic to fabric which can be filled with any nutrient-rich potting soil mix. This is a valuable option to have in the event your city experiences a major wind or rain storm, which could completely damage a plant unprotected in the ground.
Things to Consider when growing Feminized Seeds Indoors
The key difference with indoor growing is that the cannabis cultivator carries the weight of environmental choices entirely on his or her shoulders. What temperature will you run your room at during the day? During the night? How many days between watering should you leave for adequate time to not drown your plants? Will you run LED or HID lights? We could go on with thousands of other questions but need not intimidate anyone growing for the first time. These answers come quickly with experience and there are many free online resources to help you weigh out your options along the way.
If you use your common sense, there are things in nature you will want to mimic for your plants to thrive in an ideal environment. Warm temperature (68-77 degrees Fahrenheit), relatively high humidity (40-60%), and constant air circulation are all important basics to keep forefront in your mind when you plan your grow space. Of course there are things you can to do optimize the conditions to do an even better job than what a wild cannabis plant in the soil could amount to. By scanning through the extensive knowledge base of articles in our Cannabis Home Growers Guide, you will become an expert on topics such like ‘how to test your soil’s pH?’ or ‘how to mix the right nutrient solution?’.
Growing indoors can absolutely achieve some top notch quality buds, but it is a proven fact that outdoor plants will typically grow taller and achieve higher overall yields. The buds may not come out as tight and compact as indoor seed equivalents, but oftentimes the smell and flavor of outdoor grown weed is unmatched and highly sought after. There is no doubt that whether you choose to grow your feminized seeds from i49 indoors or outdoors, there is a little bit of art and a little bit of science involved. The world of cannabis cultivation is a broad topic that you could study for a lifetime. We strive to keep the selection and prices to keep you coming back season after season.
Buying feminized seeds in the USA
There have been more changes made to cannabis legislation in the last 25 years than in the 100 years before that. Long gone are the times where growers have to sneak around buying questionable seeds on the black market. Since California was the first state to legalize cannabis for medical use in 1996, many other states started to follow suit. In 2012 we saw California and Washington State bass bills to legalize cannabis for recreational use, and now at least 12 states have a fully legal approach to buying and growing marijuana (some restrictions apply for each state as far as how much weight one can buy or how many plants you can grow at one time without a medical licence).
Growers have a few choices of where to look for their weed seeds. Legal dispensaries that have storefronts may carry a few selections of different strains, many of which should be feminized as this is what new growers are generally looking for. Although dispensary seeds should be guaranteed, there is no way of knowing how long they have been on the store shelf, or how long they have been in storage before that. Seeds can become damaged in transport if not well packaged and carefully handled, so many growers choose to buy directly from seed banks.
A cannabis seed bank is a trustworthy place to get your seeds since this is entirely our specialty. We have been in the business for decades building good relationships with seed breeders and customers throughout the country. Not only are the seeds you buy through our online seed bank guaranteed to germinate (up to 80% when you follow our germination guide), but our feminized seeds are also guaranteed to sprout female plants. When you see our vast selection of over 400 seed varieties, you will understand first hand the benefit of buying your USA weed seeds online. Our Feminized seeds come in Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid varieties which can be either high in THC or CBD depending on what your needs are. The progression of the growth cycle for feminized seeds is going to look very much like any other typical cannabis seed. The one step you will be able to skip is the detection of male plants early in the flowering stage. Let’s quickly run through the different stages of life and what to expect in terms of the plant’s needs and the grower’s involvement.
Germination – As we touched on earlier, seeds require three main components in order to successfully sprout and grow. These are warmth, dark, and moisture. When these conditions have been maintained for 2-3 days consistently, your seed’s taproot will emerge and you can transplant to a small pot filled with your chosen growing medium.
Seedling Stage – As small seedlings, this is the time that your plants are really at their most fragile state. Using sturdy genuine seeds with resilient qualities is important here since cheap seeds or old seeds are more likely to flop on you during the seedling stage. Be sure to supplement with lots of lights and provide a gentle breeze to begin hardening the stems early on for a robust plant. Weed plants in the seedling stage do not require any additional nutrients, but just prefer good clean water and some nitrogen-rich compost mixed in with the growth medium.
Vegetative Stage – This is the stage when your feminized seeds experience their maximal growth. Most Indica plants will top out at not much more than 3 feet in height while many sativa strains can reach upwards of 12-15 feet when grown outdoors. Most nutrient mixes made specifically for feminized plant’s veg stage are rich in Nitrogen as this is the primary macronutrient required for cell division and cell growth. Medium phosphorous levels and medium-to-low potassium are just right for this period. If you are growing in a fixed-sized container, make sure your plant’s roots will have enough space to make it through the end. As a final note, the vegetative stage is also when you will want to start early pruning to shape your cannabis plant, or apply other low-stress training techniques that can increase locations for buds to develop.
Flowering Stage – This will be the most interesting stage for growers to watch and be a part of, especially if you have never grown cannabis yourself before. This stage will see a moderate increase in height, but most of the female plant’s energy will be applied to bud formation. As a result, a shift of nutrients is required to support the needs of the growing buds. Reduce Nitrogen levels and increase both Phosphorous (which can increase the number of flowers) and Potassium (which can help increase the bulk and weight of flowers). Pest control is going to be of apex importance right now, as things like aphids or spider mites can reap havoc on your prized buds. Growers should be aware that the scent of your growing ganja plants will undoubtedly be getting stronger and stronger throughout the flowering phase as the trichome-rich buds begin to ripen.
Harvesting – Speaking of trichomes, these little structures are going to be a large part of how you can determine the perfect time to harvest your feminized plants. Under a magnifying glass you can see the color of the trichomes changing as the days until harvest approach. The idea time is right after the shift from clear to a milky white opaque color. When you wait longer, more dark amber colors appear and the weed tends to take on a heavier sleepier kind of high. Possibly this is due to an increase in THC % also as the trichomes continue to grow and accumulate more cannabinoids and terpenes.
Drying and Curing – When you ultimately decide to cut down your plants, you will want to hang them upside down right away in a warm and dry shaded space. It is paramount to keep fresh air circulating around your drying space to avoid problems like mold or mildew to develop. Curing will take place after your feminized weed buds are trimmed and fully dried. You can keep them in a glass jar and open the lid a few times a day for 15 minutes to allow the buds to slowly dry out to a perfect level and preserve the delicate cannabinoids slowly. Well cured weed will taste and smoke the best.
Optimal lighting conditions for Feminized Seeds
Feminized seeds are not the same as autoflowering seeds. Feminized seeds available on the i49.net website are all ‘photoperiod’ seeds, which means that they will require a change of light schedule to instruct the plant to switch from vegetative stage into the flowering stage. Plants can veg on 14 to 20 hours of continual daylight, but in order to flower this must be changed to a 12 light / 12 dark schedule. Outdoors, this can be achieved naturally with the passing of autumnal equinox (near the end of September). For some outdoor growers this is a little late to allow for adequate flowering time before winter, so if this is the case you will have to artificially shade your plants for a few hours and the beginning or ending of the day.
If you are growing indoors, consider the many options you have to shed light on your feminized cannabis seed plants. Different types of lights offer different benefits at different times. Some cost more than others and some run hot while others remain cool to the touch. These factors combined will also determine how high above your plants you need to be hanging your lights, so be prepared to be flexible throughout your grow as you learn and work out the bugs.
Optimal nutrients for Feminized Seeds
Nutrient mixes that are made specifically for cannabis come highly recommended since they take the guess work out of mixing your own blends. The primary macronutrients required for the different types of cannabis plants to grow are consistent across the board. In fact essentially all plants require the same basic building blocks of life in order to germinate, grow, and reproduce. These are Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium – abbreviated NPK. There are specific mixes available designed for the vegetative and glowering (or blooming) stage that contain more specific ratios of N-P-K, as well as the dozens of micro nutrients that are needed. Some of the micro nutrients, just to name a few, are sulfur, magnesium, calcium, boron, and zinc.
What yields can I expect from my Feminized Seeds?
The benefit of choosing feminized seeds is that your overall crop should be higher than if you were to use regular, un-sexed seeds. This is because male plants in your garden will essentially waste garden space and nutrients by not giving you valuable buds at the end of your grow. When you know that your plants will turn out 100% productive, then a high yield is sure to come your way as long as you take proper care of the plant.
The yield from different cannabis seeds that you buy online are really dependent on the characteristic of that seed’s strain of Cannabis. The two main streams or cannabis families are Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica. Feminized Sativa seeds will typically yield slightly more than Feminized Indica Plants, only because of their potential to have a bigger overall size (more bud sites). Many Indica plants are designed to be high-yielding though, such as Gorilla Glue #4 Fem and Moby Dick These can yield well over 20 ounces per plant when grown in ideal outdoor pot conditions. Check the listing of your particular strain before you add it to the cart. Remember, more isn’t always better, as some low or average yield strains are designed to be grown closer together and pack an epic punch of THC with incredible flavor!
Other benefits of Feminized Seeds
- Every plant will develop buds
- No having to cull out male marijuana plants
- Zero percent risk of pollination
- No wasting grow space and nutrients on useless males
Advanced tips (Do’s and Don’ts) for Feminized Seeds
DO - Choose your seeds and supplier carefully. Not all feminized seeds are created equal. Our seeds are sourced from verified breeders and kept in ideal storage conditions.
DO - Keep it Simple. Marijuana, or ‘weed’ as it is commonly known, is inherently easy to grow. Furthermore, it grows wonderfully in a large bucket filled with good quality potting soil.
DO - Try Growing Outdoors. Even if you have a successful indoor grow room that is pumping out a regular crop of epic buds, there is a unique enjoyment that can be had growing outside. Whether it is a small single potted plant on your back porch, or a feminized blue dream plant to decorate your rose garden, the cannabis plant is a beautiful sight to behold and can add a fragrant twist to any small home garden.
DO - Experiment and learn from your mistakes. There are some cornerstone truths and biological principles that guide the cannabis growth cycle. Beyond the basics though, there is no real “right” or “wrong” way of doing things. Be a farmer and a scientist at the same time and record your successes. Maybe you can publish your own grow bible some day after decades of experience.
DO - Try different veg cycles. Most strains can benefit from at least 4-5 weeks of vegetative growth to support the development of strong branches and healthy roots. Some growers have great results vegging for up to 6-10 weeks, which essentially just gets you a larger plant. Techniques such as SOG (‘Sea Of Green’) require cultivators to switch to flowering after 1-2 weeks, which enables many smaller plants to be grown closer together in a small space, hence the name.
DON’T - Over-feed your plants. It can be tempting to be overly nurturing as though more food will make your plants happier. Avoid this temptation and instead stick with a proved feeding schedule for beginners. You don’t want to risk something like nutrient burn by giving your weed crop too much of a good thing.
DON’T - Over-water your plants. Same applies for water as with nutrients. These plants are weeds. They thrive on difficult environments. Without stressing them too much, cannabis plants will actually produce better results if you let them go slightly thirsty between watering days.
DO - Try different lighting options. There are different benefits with LED light than there are with Fluorescent, HID, HPS, and sunlight. Experiment with different options if you have the room for it, or explore combining more than one. You don’t need to spend tons of money right off the starting line, but this is equipment that you can slowly accumulate over the years.
DO -Think about harvest time. Don’t get so caught up in the fun growing that you forget why you’re growing in the first place. The whole process is a bit of a marathon requiring tons of patience and attention to detail. Make the most of your quality feminized seeds and bring home the bacon with a profitable crop.

When you assess whether a seed bank is worth your business, remember to check out customer reviews and patron’s feedback. We prioritize having committed customer service staff ready to take your call who are well-trained and well-compensated. Feminized seeds have surpassed regular and auto flower seeds in terms of popularity. We carry a huge assortment of Sativa feminized seeds and Indica feminized seeds that will provide you with a hassle-free growing experience. Growers will still need to be on the ball in monitoring their feminized plants for signs of over- or under-feeding, light-stress, and pests. But there will be no need to carefully inspect your plants on a daily basis with a magnifying glass questioning whether each plant has started to grow pollen sacs. While having this level of curiosity of your plants is normal at first, growers quickly tire of this step because if you miss even one male or miss the pollination event by just one day, it can be too late and your crop can be seriously jeopardized.
