The Father of Genetics is the “title” earned by Johann Gregor Mendel (1822 – 1884) for his work using the humble pea plant as the subject of his studies. Mendel was a scientist and an Augustinian Friar who essentially discovered the reason that we tend to look like our parents. He recognized the existence of dominant and recessive traits and used a mathematical basis to form three tenets of inheritance known as Mendel’s Laws:
- The Law of Segregation – This law dictates that offspring inherit one set of genes from each parent. Genes normally come in pairs except for sex or reproductive cells that have a single gene to pair up with the other parent’s reproductive cells.
- The Law of Independent Assortment – This means that inherited eye color, for example, is not related to inherited hair color. They are independent of each other.
- The Law of Dominance – This is best explained using eye color. Brown eyes are dominant and blue eyes are recessive. With a gene pair, the dominant gene will always prevail if present. The four possible combinations of a gene pair are brown-brown, brown-blue, blue-brown and blue-blue and only the blue-blue combination will result in blue eyes.
Mendel spent eight years on his research, and he tracked thousands of pea plants to develop his theories. He was truly a man born before his time as his work was not accepted until the beginning of the 20th century. The wide variety of cannabis seeds offered by i49 Seed Bank is an example of Mendel’s Laws in action
Early Growing Strains
It is thought that the original strain of cannabis came from someplace in Asia eventually drifting to other locations and evolving into several subspecies. Three of these subspecies are Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis with Afghanica and Hemp being accepted by some as original strains.
Sativa strains began appearing in the USA around 1960 as global travel before the era of tight security measures allowed for a relatively easy entry into the country. Indica appeared on the scene in the early 1970s, and this was the genesis of attempts to crossbreed the strains to produce a more potent and hopefully less expensive strain able to grow in a less favorable climate. The boom in crossbreeding occurred in the 1980s. Presently, with a greater understanding of genetics including how to produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) the possible strains of cannabis are limited only by the imagination of the cross-breeder.
The seed offerings at i49 are a showcase for the “best of the best” strains of cannabis on the market today. i49 is one of the dispensaries that sell cannabis seeds online that offers 18 varieties for indoor growth in a more controlled environment and another 18 varieties for outdoor growth. The choices include seeds from the Sativa and Indica strains and 15 hybrid offerings. The list continues with strains geared for medical purposes as well as auto-flowering and feminized strains.
